Oppo patent shows a clamshell foldable with the screen on the outside
Well over a year ago Oppo demonstrated a prototype foldable phone at the MWC, however nothing came of it. Since then multiple patents have surfaced, revealing various designs that the company is experimenting with. The latest design to crop up is a clamshell, kind of like an inverted Moto RAZR, and it has an interesting feature – angle detection. The phone is designed to fold with the screen remaining outside. Folded, it’s fairly compact and squarish, but doesn’t need an external screen like the RAZR. It’s more similar to the RAZR rather than the Galaxy Z Flip as one half is slightly...

The Sony WF-1000XM3 were Sony's first truly wireless in-ear noise-canceling earphones. For many, it had the same combination of great active noise-canceling and good enough audio quality that the full-size WH-1000XM3 offered, but in a more discreet form. Now, over a full year later, Sony launched these earphones in the Indian market, which allowed me to do a full review on them. via shopmatrixWeekly poll: are the Asus Zenfone 7 and 7 Pro sleeper hits?
The Asus Zenfone 7 Pro is a significant improvement over the previous generation. The Zenfone 6 from last year was pretty capable too, but it had issues translating that into sales. It only has 1080p resolution, though, while most premium models have moved to 1440p. Except gaming phones, but this isn’t a gaming phone. via shopmatrixFlashback: the Oppo N1 turned the camera around on you
Not long after phones first learned how to take photos came the first phones with dedicated selfie cameras. But the arrival of 3G networks meant that not just any camera would do – a core feature of 3G was the native video calls. Barely anyone did that, but we got some interesting phones out of it. Like the Sony Ericsson V800, for instance, which had a camera that normally pointed away from you to take photos, but could be rotated to point towards you too. Back then you had to rotate it manually, that was the norm. And it remained so until the Oppo N1 arrived. The phone is notable for...

Weekly poll results: under-display cameras are exciting, never mind potential downsides
Last week’s poll shows that the image quality of selfies is not a priority – instead most people prefer a sleek-looking, waterproof phone. 75% of voters were in favor of under-display cameras while only 25% preferred the flip-up design. Durability really proved to be a key concern, beyond just water resistance. Many are still not convinced that the flip-up mechanism will last the lifetime of the phone. Also, the mechanism does take up a lot more volume. Asus claims the Zenfone 7 motor has more than double the torque of last year’s model and that the flip up can withstand 35 kg pushing...

Redmi 9A tipped to come to India soon rebadged to Redmi 9i
Redmi brought over the Redmi 9C to India as the Redmi 9 earlier today. Before that, we saw the Redmi 9 Prime debut - that one was based on the global Redmi 9. This leaves the Redmi 9A as the only Redmi 9 variant yet to grace India and according to a new tip from Ishan Agarwal, we’ll see it as the Redmi 9i. Redmi 9A Yes, that’s Xiaomi’s increasingly convoluted naming scheme in play but it makes sense given the previous rebadged Redmi 9 models. There’s still no exact word on the launch date and pricing of the device but according to the Redmi 9i might come with a slightly higher price...
via shopmatrixFuture AirPods might drop the force detection sensors for touch sensors
According to a series of filed patents, Apple's future AirPods could come with simple touch sensors instead of force detection for control. The documents reason that this would provide an improved control with a wider variety of gestures. For example, the touch sensors will be able to recognize gestures like swipes for volume control. No more squeezing or strong taps to control your music or answering calls. The simple touch sensors work in a totally different way. The touch sensor will cover the better part of the exterior of the AirPod and it looks for "change in capacitance." ...

Fairphone 3+ comes with improved cameras and NFC, same ethical commitment
In a tech world obsessed with short upgrade cycles and the race for the ultimate spec’d phone we tend to put aside some moral topics like e-waste, material sources and working conditions for the people who assemble the devices. Fairphone has positioned itself as the ethical smartphone choice and today it’s announcing its latest entry - the Fairphone 3+. In most aspects its similar to its predecessor though the big upgrade this time is in the camera department with a 48MP main shooter and 16MP selfie cam. Fairphone 3+ Existing Fairphone 3 users can also upgrade their phone’s...
via shopmatrixIndian Redmi 9 unveiled with two cameras, Helio G35
Xiaomi's increasingly confusing Redmi lineup got a new addition today as the company announced the Redmi 9 in India. It's not what global markets get as Redmi 9, since that one is known as Redmi 9 Prime in India. Instead, the newly unveiled Indian Redmi 9 is very similar to the Redmi 9C from earlier this summer, save for the downgraded main camera. The Redmi 9 for India has the same looks, including the squircle (square circle, as the Xiaomi rep, joyfully revealed) island with four holes. One is for the 13 MP main shooter, next to it is the 2 MP depth sensor, on the bottom row is the...

via shopmatrixEpic Games confirms Fortnite’s new season won’t be playable on Apple devices
Apple and Epic Games are still in the middle of an ongoing legal battle as the company sues Apple for unfair market practices in the App Store. Following the removal of the game from both Apple and Android’s respective app stores, Epic games slapped both tech giants with lawsuits. Then on Tuesday, Epic Games won a small victory as the court would not allow Apple to sever ties with its APIs and Unreal Engine – a wide used gaming platform owned by Epic Games. The caveat was that Apple does not have to put Fortnite back on the App Store, but this also means that Fortnite players on...

BLU G90 Pro launches with Helio G90T chipset, $200 price tag
BLU has just launched its newest unlocked smartphone in the US market, the G90 Pro. We have to say, we didn't expect the name itself to make perfect sense, but it does: the phone is powered by MediaTek's Helio G90T chipset. In a mobile world dominated by impossibly complicated naming schemes, this is a breath of fresh air indeed. Then again, there's also a BLU G90, announced back in June, only that one has the Helio A25 SoC at the helm. Anyway, name shenanigans aside, the G90 Pro has a 6.5-inch 1080x2340 LCD touchscreen with 19:9 aspect ratio, 4GB of RAM, 128GB of expandable...
