via shopmatrixFlashback: some crazy phones had three or even four SIM card slots
How many SIM slots does your phone have? In some regions dual-SIM models are quite popular, though in recent years eSIM (embedded SIM) has started taking over from the secondary slot for an external card. Many carriers offer low cost roaming or there is no roaming at all (e.g. within the EU), so having the option to pop in a extra card from a local carrier has become less important. But this is now, a decade ago some makers weren’t sure how many phone lines you may need in your pocket. One? Two? Four? Let’s start with the loneliest number. As we explained in a previous installment, the...

Weekly poll results: Huawei Mate Xs 2 struggles to justify its price tag
Most people feel that foldables are too expensive – not that we had any doubt that is still the case, but last week’s poll reaffirms that belief. Unfortunately for the Huawei Mate Xs 2, it’s not only the price that is dissuading people from wanting one, the outward-folding design may have been a bad idea. A common theme emerged while reading through the comments – €2,000 for a phone with a year old chipset, no 5G and no Google Play Store is too much. The lack of access to parts and services was caused by trade sanctions against Huawei and the situation is unlikely to change...

Weekly poll results: the Sony Xperia 1 IV and 10 IV are great, if you can afford them
This is the blight of the Sony fan – last week’s poll shows that 3 in 4 people want to buy the new flagship, the Xperia 1 IV, but only 1 in 4 actually have the money for it. The rest wish it was cheaper, but that might take a while. The Mark 3 started at €1,300 a year ago. Today, you can find one for around €900 with some shopping around. But the Mark 4 starts at €1,400, so if it falls the same amount, it will still be a €1,000 phone a year from now. Ouch. With rising inflation and an uncertain economy not everyone has Xperia 1 money to spend. Few people found faults in the hardware,...

Chinese display maker Beijing Oriental Electronics (BOE) struck a deal with Apple to supply OLED panels for the iPhone 14 series. However, South Korean publication The Elec reports that the company is yet to receive approval from Apple for the iPhone 14's displays, and it could actually lose the order of about 30 million OLED screens for the 2022 iPhones. That's because BOE unilaterally changed the design of the circuit width of the iPhone 13's OLED panels earlier this year to increase the yield rate, which resulted in Apple asking BOE to halt the production of the panels. Apple...

vivo Y75 launches in India with MediaTek Helio G96 chipset, 44 MP selfie cam
Back in January vivo made the Y75 5G official, and it took until today for the 4G version to also be announced. The vivo Y75 was introduced for the Indian market, and interestingly enough this isn't the first vivo Y75 - in fact there was another one launched back in 2017, but vivo seems to have forgotten about it. Anyway, the new Y75 comes with a 6.44-inch 1080x2400 AMOLED screen with 60 Hz refresh rate, the MediaTek Helio G96 SoC at the helm, 8GB of RAM, 128GB of expandable storage, and a 4,050 mAh battery with 44W fast charging. Memory-wise, you can also have an extra 4GB of virtual RAM...

As you may know, the Pixel Watch is coming. Long a figment of tech enthusiasts' imaginations, this year it's actually real - Google itself confirmed as much, seemingly unable to keep it a secret even though the launch is only happening "this fall", which probably translates into October. So, we have a few months of Pixel Watch leaks ahead of us, and the latest one from about a week ago told us that the wearable would use Samsung's Exynos 9110 chipset. That's a bit concerning since that SoC came out in 2018 and is built on a 10nm process. Today a new source seemingly corroborates the...

Yesterday afternoon, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman Tweeted about an issues that some T-Mobile customers are experiencing on iPhones. Specifically, some lines activated with eSIM were suddenly deactivated from iMessage and FaceTime with no way to re-activate the line with Apple’s core communication services. There is a very nasty iPhone and @TMobile bug where iMessage and FaceTime for a device’s phone number will randomly deactivate and there is no way to reactivate it. The only solution that worked for me is getting a new physical SIM card. An extremely disappointing issue.— Mark Gurman...
