2020 Winners and Losers: Google
2020 was an interesting year for Google. After releasing its first mid-ranger with the the Pixel 3a in 2019 the company eschewed the flagship segment altogether in 2020. The Pixel 4a, Pixel 4a 5G and Pixel 5 all use Snapdragon 700 series chipsets and have a total of 8 cameras between them including the selfie snappers. The shift from proper flagship hardware, meant Google doubled-down on software as the core of a great experience. A very "in-character" decision for the search giant, but Pixel traditionalists found it a bit hard to accept. Loser: Google Pixel 4a Going in...

Expectations are the OnePlus 9 Pro will have two prominent...

My top 5 phones of 2020 - Ro
My outlook on this year's smartphone market is in stark contrast to the year as a whole. I actually feel like 2020 was a better year for smartphones than 2019, seeing technologies introduced last year rapidly evolve and mature. Just take a look at how fast we jumped from 90Hz displays to having 120Hz and even 144Hz bright, energy-efficient OLEDs. Even LCDs have been improved in this regard so now midrangers employ HRR panels. Under-display fingerprint readers have taken a big step too. I'm still using my trusty OnePlus 7 Pro, which boasted probably the fastest UD fingerprint reader...

Yet another Oppo Reno5 phone in the works, certified with 30W charging
During the past month, Oppo released three new Reno5 phones on two different occasions. A fourth one for the global audience was also leaked, and it appears a fifth one has been certified at 3C - it is said to be called Oppo Reno5 Lite 5G and will have 30W VOOC charging. Oppo PELM00 on 3C The listing at 3C (China Compulsory Certification) is for a phone codenamed PELM00. While the official moniker has not yet been confirmed, we are pretty confident in the rumor, and we believe Oppo will try to marginalize the Reno5 brand in all price categories. Speaking about the charging, the...

My Top 5 phones of 2020: Yordan
The past year has been unusual for everyone, but at least the smartphone world kept going. We saw devices get released left and right, the market battle remained as fierce as ever, and it became harder and harder to answer a simple question - “what phone should I get.” What follows are my Top 5 phones for 2020, and I - the ones I’d recommend to my friends in a heartbeat. My selection is almost entirely based on the value for money proposition of each device. Huawei Mate 40 Pro The start of the year was turbulent for Huawei as I discovered life without Google services to be...
via shopmatrixSony is developing another camera sensor with Oppo, this time for the Find X3 series
Oppo introduced a new camera sensor by Sony called IMX766 in its latest smartphone, the Reno5 Pro+ 5G. One leakster from China claims both companies are going even further in their partnership and we should expect yet another new sensor - IMX789. It will be initially reserved for the Oppo Find X3 flagship series, before arriving at other manufacturers. Sony and Oppo seem to have a great business relationship in developing custom sensors. The Oppo Find X2 Pro’s main camera arrived with an IMX689 sensor that was 1/1.43” in size or 11.2 mm in physical diagonal, which is massive for a...

via shopmatrix2020 Winners and Losers: OnePlus
OnePlus became a different company this year. It had been gradually opening up to a wider product line, first with the mid-season T-upgrade, then with the introduction of Pro models. However, in 2020 the door swung all the way open and through it walked not only a mid-ranger, but even an entry-level phone. Winner: OnePlus 8 Pro There was only one Pro model this year and it was enough – that there was nothing left to fix with a T Pro is a testament to how good the OnePlus 8 Pro is. And the company knew it, this is its most expensive product to date. The price is comparable with flagships...
via shopmatrixTop 10 trending phones of week 52
As we see off the last full week of 2020 we get the Apple flagship on top of our trending chart. The iPhone 12 Pro Max has been there before, but it's been months since it last managed this feat. The upcoming Galaxy S21 Ultra has replaced the S21+ in the top 10 and has even managed to make the podium, while the most popular phone of the year - the Galaxy A51 rounds up the top three. The Redmi Note 9 pair of China-bound Pro 5G and international Pro follow, with their Poco X3 NFC cousin in sixth. Then there's another Xiaomi-made phone in the Mi 10T Pro and one more Poco - the M3....
via shopmatrixTop 20 most popular phones in 2020
It is time to reflect on the smartphone scene as we’re sending off quite an unusual and remarkable year behind us. A lot of things happened and many of us were locked within the confinements of our own homes, having nothing but a smart device to connect to the outside world. Thankfully, the smartphone companies kept delivering and they launched some incredible products in the past twelve months. We gathered a list of the top 20 most popular phones and half of those were manufactured by Samsung - no surprise there from the world’s biggest smartphone maker. Apple, OnePlus, and...
via shopmatrixBeyond the phones: Our favorite gadgets of 2020
2020 was a really tough year, no question about it. The pandemic and ensuing economic crisis undoubtedly left its mark on most every part of life and the tech industry was no exception. Though, not necessarily in a strictly "doom and gloom" manner. Surprisingly enough, 2020 proved to be an huge year for the computer realm in particular, with major advancements being made in both CPU and GPU performance. Granted, most of these tainted by huge stock shortages and unavailability. An unfortunately common reality for tech releases in 2020 as a whole. But, we digress. Without further ado,...
via shopmatrix2020 Winners and Losers: Xiaomi
This year Xiaomi continued its march to the upper echelon of the smartphone industry. We saw the release of the brand’s all-out flagships - the Mi 10 Pro and Mi 10 Ultra, record-breaking shipments numbers and an increased push in more European markets. Xiaomi now sits in third place by global smartphone shipments and continues to offer competitively priced devices in all corners of the market. Winner - Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro Like last year’s barrage of Mi 9 series phones, 2020 brought plenty of options from the Mi 10 series. The Mi 10 Pro was Xiaomi’s first take at an all-out flagship sparing...

Introduction Smartmi, also known as Zhimi, is a Chinese manufacturer of smart home devices. Just as expected from a Xiaomi subsidiary, Smartmi’s devices are reasonably priced, well designed, and they integrate with the other Xiaomi smart home products. Smartmi’s headline products are the air purifiers they make – they offer a few distinct models on their Chinese website. Still, the single model they offer internationally has just had its Kickstarter campaign finished. It’s aptly named the Smartmi Air Purifier, and this is the device we have for review today. We got our review...
via shopmatrixMy top 5 phones of 2020 – Victor
Being knee-deep in the mobile industry on a daily basis is undoubtedly a dream job for me. For it lets me experience the latest and greatest tech. However, while far from complaining, there are certain aspects of my job I find a bit annoying. For a few years we've seen an avalanche of nearly-identical, bland handsets flooding the market, with an impossibly short turnover. I frankly hate that this is the state that a big chunk of the glorious smartphone industry is in. So, in order for a phone to make my personal top list it needs a purpose and clear goal - in other words a reason for...
via shopmatrixFlashback: periscope zoom cams with smooth zoom are the future, but we already had them
In 2019 the Huawei P30 Pro and Oppo Reno 10x zoom kicked off a zoom arms race with the introduction of the periscope telephoto lens – or should we say “re-introduction”. One phone had a periscope several years ago and with a design that was more advanced than modern phones. Currently, you can get a periscope-equipped phones from Huawei, Oppo, Samsung, Xiaomi, vivo and Honor. But they have two major downsides. One, they have very long focal lengths (100+ mm). And two, they are locked at that focal length. This means that mid-range zoom requires either digital zoom with the main camera...

Weekly poll: smartphone design trends you'd hate to see continue in 2021
We already established the features you look forward to in 2021, but now we wanted to know the opposite – which recent trends in smartphone design would you hate to see continue next year? Most phones today have three or four cameras, even the entry-level models that can’t actually fit three real modules in the budget. This has led to a high number of low-res “depth sensors” and “macro cameras”, the benefit of which is marginal to non-existent. More annoyingly, some high-end phones also pad out their camera count with a 2 MP something-or-other module. Speaking of cameras, we saw...
via shopmatrix2020 Winners and Losers: Apple
It's been a difficult year for everyone, and even the giant that is Apple faced some atypical disruptions. It needed to sort a lot of supply and manufacturing hurdles in order to unload its considerable fleet of devices this year. It even needed to push the announcement of its golden goose - the iPhone line by as much as two months due to the pandemic. But still 2020 has been a slam dunk year for Apple. Using the strong momentum of sales of its iPhone 11 and XR series in 2019, Apple started the year off a bit later than it perhaps indented, but with a bang. Winner: Apple iPhone SE...

A while back we heard that Huawei is working on several PCs powered by its own silicon - desktop PCs and laptops. With the company already confirming its desktop PC powered by its own HiSilicon ARM chip, we now more details about the notebook too, albeit from a leak rather than an official source. A trustworthy Weibo tipster posted a photo of the notebook's box revealing some key specs. The device is powered by the Kirin 990 chipset paired with 8GB of RAM, 512GB SSD and a 14-inch 1080p display. The laptop runs Linux-based Deepin OS 20 but the transition to HarmonyOS will be made...
