Facebook brought the ability to send and receive SMS messages via Messenger back in 2016 but the feature is now going away. Facebook announced the news in a new post on its Help Center page. Users who rely on Messenger as their default SMS app will no longer be able to send and receive texts after updating the app on September 28. Facebook is also advising Android users to switch their default messaging app to Google Messages or their phone’s default messages app. Source
